Bikram Choudhury is the founder of the worldwide Yoga College of India™. Born in Calcutta in 1946, Bikram began Yoga at the age of four with India's most-renowned physical culturist at that time, Bishnu Charan Ghosh, the younger brother of Paramahansa Yogananda (Author of the most popular book on Yoga, "The Autobiography of a Yogi," and founder of the "Self-Realization Fellowship" in Los Angeles). Bikram practiced Yoga at least four to six hours every day at Ghosh's College of Physical Education in Calcutta. At the age of thirteen, he won the National India Yoga Championship. He was undefeated for the following three years and retired as the undisputed All-India National Yoga Champion. At seventeen, an injury to his knee during a weight-lifting accident brought the prediction from leading European doctors that he would never walk again. |

Not accepting their pronouncement, Bikram had himself carried back to Bishnu Ghosh's school, for he knew that if anyone could help to heal his knee, it was his teacher. Six months later, his knee had totally recovered. Bishnu Ghosh was a celebrated physical culturist and the first to scientifically document Yoga's ability to cure chronic physical ailments and heal the body. Bikram was asked by Ghosh to start several Yoga schools in India. There Bikram came into his own. The schools were so successful that at Bishnu's request Bikram traveled to Japan and opened two more. He has since brought his curative methods of Yoga therapy around the world.

Proper weight, muscle tone, vibrant good health, and a sense of well-being will automatically follow.
BIKRAM YOGA
This Hatha Yoga system will improve your body's strength, flexibility, and balance as well as your overall health and well being. Bikram Yoga is a challenging 26 posture (asana) series performed in a heated room, which is how Bikram yoga became known as "hot yoga." The heat facilitates deeper stretching, reduces the chance of injury, and stimulates the circulatory system. Blood flow to the body is increased bringing oxygen to all areas of the body while simultaneously removing toxins from those same areas. Each pose is performed in a specific order, to the best of one's ability, and can be done by students of all levels. Repeating the 26 postures each class makes Bikram yoga unique in your ability to move deeper with greater understanding. There are many modalities of yoga based on Hatha yoga, the physical branch of yoga, such as Asthanga, Iyengar, Kripalu, and Anusara yoga, and the Bikram series is the most popular and accessible yoga in the country right now. Bikram yoga is used for the prevention and treatment of many chronic diseases. Bikram yoga method has been proven to be a uniquely beneficial form of exercise tailored for our cultural problems of stress, bad posture, poor eating habits and the relief of limitations caused by aging, illness, injury and self-doubt. A regular Bikram Yoga practice strengthens the immune system, improves posture and spinal alignment, strengthens joints, eases back pain, tones muscles, builds strength, stamina, and flexibility and relieves stress and tension. Our goal at Bikram Yoga Austin ~ Yogagroove is to provide you a safe and welcoming environment where you can begin or advance your yoga practice with certified and qualified instructors. |

"Give 100% of yourself to every
posture. It does not matter how
much of the posture you do, just how much you put into it. If you can only do 10% of the posture,
but you are doing it with 100%
focus, effort, and intention, you
will get 100% of the benefits."
